Three days on a bicycle – a thousand memories

Price valid from Tue 01 May 2018 - Wed 31 Oct 2018

The adventure of exploring a new landscape with good friends is priceless. By combining two wheels with ferry crossings you can explore the magnificent Helgeland coast, the region’s idyllic islands, beaches and lakes, fishing villages, see old wooden houses and churches. This excursion, from your comfortable base in Sandnessjøen, consists of a series of one-day “island-hops” to Alstahaug, Herøy and Dønna – three of the finest and most picturesque areas for cycling. Three days rich in memorable moments…

Day 1: Alstahaug
Pick up your bicycles, maps and detailed information for your excursion – it’s all waiting for you at the Tourist Information Office in Sandnessjøen town centre. Energised by your desire to explore, head toward Alstahaug on the Coastal Highway Fv17. Here is the Petter Dass Museum, built in honour of Helgeland’s renowned 17th-century poet-priest. Consider a detour on the mountain road along the foot of the Seven Sisters range (De syv søstre) to the village of Søvik. On your return journey, stop at Sandnes, the old Viking chieftain’s seat, just 1 km south of Sandnessjøen.

In the evening, conversation over dinner will likely focus on this first day of your cycling adventure.

Distances and approximate cycling times:
Sandnessjøen – Petter Dass Museum 19.5 km (1 hour 10 minutes)
Sandnessjøen–Søvik 14.5 km (ca 55 min.)
Søvik – Petter Dass Museum 7 km (25 min.)
Sandnessjøen–Sandnes 1 km (10 min.)

Day 2: Dønna
Take the Sandnessjøen–Dønna ferry, crossing the Alstenfjord to Bjørn. The island of Dønna offers beautiful varied scenery, and ever-changing views of the sea and mountains. The country roads on Dønna have moderate elevation changes, and allow alternative routes.

Two of the island’s most popular attractions are the venerable but well-preserved Dønnes Farm, situated at the foot of Dønnesfjellet, and Nordvika, one of Northern Norway’s oldest trading posts. The white wooden Nordvik church dates from 1871.The island of Dønna invites you to slow your pace, immerse yourself in the scenery, savouring the view as you cycle or stop to enjoy a picnic. Alternatively you can enjoy lunch at the museum, or in the restaurant at Dønnes Farm. Consider a guided tour of the nearby Dønnes church, stone-built in the 13th century.
Another recommended stop is the burial mound and the stone phallus at Glein. According to legend, you can increase your fertility by sitting awhile atop this stone. At Dønnes Farm, it might be worthwhile to park your bike and hike to the top of Dønnesfjellet. The summit offers an impressive panorama that includes many of the region’s famous mountains, including Lovund, Træna, Hestmona (the Horseman), De syv søstre (The Seven Sisters), Rødøyløva (the Lion of Rødøy), and Dønnamannen (the Dønna Man).

After returning to the ferry quay in Bjørn with many impressions, and perhaps some great photos, take the ferry back to Sandnessjøen.

Distances and approximate cycling times:
Sandnessjøen ferry quay Just 20 metres from your hotel!
Ferry to Dønna 25 min.
Bjørn – Dønnes Farm 18.5 km (1 hour 30 min.)
Bjørn – Nordvika old trading post 13 km (50 min.)
Nordvika – Dønnes Farm 9 km (30 min.)

Day 3: Herøy
Again, take the Sandnessjøen–Dønna ferry to Bjørn, but then head south, following the base of Dønnamannen mountain and crossing the bridge to Herøy. Despite being singular in Norwegian, Herøy comprises several linked islands as well as hundreds of islets and skerries. This is the day for enjoying beautiful views of sea and mountains, and for walking or running barefoot on sandy white beaches.
Did you bring a fishing gear? There are lots of excellent fishing spots along your route; casting your line from the shore, you might well catch a tasty lunch. Or leaving the cooking to the chef at Augustbryggo, who specialises in traditional fare, or Herøy Brygge (2 km south of Flostad ferry quay) where every dish is based on locally-sourced ingredients. Regardless of your culinary preference, be sure to visit Etcetera Botaniske Utskeielser afterwards, a shop best described as “a flowering work of art” – it’s situated just past Hoholm Bridge.

After exploring Herøy, roll your bike onto the Flostad–Søvik ferry, which has frequent departures. From Flostad you have an easy ride back to Sandnessjøen, with plenty of vistas and good places for a break. Depending on your rental agreement, you can return the bike and equipment at your hotel in Sandnessjøen or at the airport.

Distances and approximate cycling times:
Bjørn–Flostad 28.5 km (2 hours)
